New IllinoisPIP Project—Cracks and Holes

The Akin Prekindergarten, in southern Illinois, provides full-day early childhood education for 17 children ages 3 to 5 years old. While running in the field beside the school playground, the children noticed cracks in the ground and wanted to know what caused them. The teachers decided to let the children experiment and figure out the cause of the cracks on their own.

Ask an Expert—Supporting Resilience in Children Exposed to Domestic Violence

Despite enduring violent episodes, children can be incredibly resilient and can even learn to thrive and flourish. Early childhood programs, and most importantly those who work in them, can provide a haven away from the crises and chaos that violence creates for children. Karen Stephens, director of the Illinois State University Child Care Center, responded to questions submitted during February about helping children exposed to domestic violence. Her responses can be viewed at http://illinoisearlylearning.org/askanexpert/stephens2009/trans.htm.
