New Parenting Video Clips & Resources

Four new video clips have been added to the IEL Web site!
  • The first two videos show a mother and a father reading with their 4-year-old son who has special needs. The mother, reading in English, illustrates a number of ways to engage the child while sharing one of his favorite storybooks. The father, reading in Spanish, uses several strategies that help sustain the boy’s interest in a book and strengthen his familiarity with Spanish. To view the videos, please go to http://illinoisearlylearning.org/videos/connecting-concepts.htm and http://illinoisearlylearning.org/videos/reading-partners.htm.
  • In the third video, a mother and her 3-year-old daughter engage in pretend play with some familiar toys. Joining her daughter in pretend play allows the mother to model play skills, extend pretend play, help build vocabulary, and promote problem-solving skills. In the fourth video, by listening carefully to her daughter, the mother discovers things she can help her daughter understand in areas such as counting, good manners, and nutrition. To view the videos, please go to http://illinoisearlylearning.org/videos/dog-shark.htm and http://illinoisearlylearning.org/videos/going-camping.htm.
  • Accompanying each new parenting video are additional strategies for reading to or playing with young children, related IEL Tip Sheets, and other resources.
