Interviews with Early Care and Education Notables

Did you know that Illinois is home to a number of people who have been leaders in early care, education, and intervention? From time to time, IEL invites some of those "early childhood notables" into conversation with our staff on topics that are important today.

Lilian G. KatzKatzLilian G. Katz is an international leader in early childhood education. She taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for more than three decades and directed the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education (ERIC/EECE) for more than 30 years. Dr. Katz has authored more than 150 publications about early childhood education, teacher education, child development, and parenting.

Barbara BowmanBowmanBarbara Bowman is the chief early childhood education officer for the Chicago Public Schools and a former consultant to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. She is one of the three faculty founders of Erikson Institute and served as its president from 1994 to 2001. Barbara is the Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Development at Erikson Institute and is past-president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Sam MeiselsMeiselsSam Meisels is the president of Erikson Institute and coauthor of the Work Sampling System, the Early Screening Inventory–Revised, the Ounce Scale, and the Handbook of Early Childhood Intervention. Sam has been an advisor to National Head Start and has served as a senior investigator for the national Early Childhood Longitudinal Study.

Vivian PaleyPaleyVivian Paley has written many books about her experiences in the classroom. She has also received numerous awards. In 2004, Vivian was named Outstanding Educator by the National Council of Teachers of English.

Jeanette McCollumMcCollumJeanette McCollum is a professor emerita in early childhood special education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a leader in research and personnel preparation in the field of early intervention (EI) and early childhood special education (ECSE).


Past Ask an Expert Events

From 2005 through 2009, IEL featured “Ask an Expert” events on a variety of topics. During each event, IEL users submitted questions electronically to a specialist. Selected questions and their answers were posted to the “Ask an Expert” section of the IEL Web site. Answers to questions on a number of topics can be found through the links below.
